Statement from Marshall Meadors The difference between a political campaign and most other things we do in life is that it has a finite existence. So when the campaign ends, everyone scatters for some needed R & R, to go back to a normal life or simply because the end has come.
As a result, most of us who have served as staff to the campaign don’t get a chance to thank those who have been so instrumental in helping us get our jobs done -you the supporters and volunteers. So on behalf of Diana, Caroline, Hannah, Lynn, myself and most importantly, Marshall, THANK YOU for all the signs you put out, envelopes you stuffed, stamps that you stuck, calls that you made, doors that you knocked on, fundraisers you attended, dollars you gave, parties you planned and attended, literature you delivered and other jobs you performed. Without your help, we would never have had a chance and the campaign would never have gotten off the ground.
One of the things that Marshall was proudest of in our race, was that we did not make a direct appeal for money during the campaign. We had hoped to avoid such an appeal all together. By your attendance at fundraising events and unsolicited generosity, we were able to fund an extensive campaign that left no stone unturned.
In order to attempt to maximize our dollars and not spend frivolously, we
established a campaign budget and then went about the business of raising the
money to fund it. During the course of the campaign we monitored our spending
and a reviewed our expenditures on a regular basis. I am proud to say, that with a couple of exceptions, we stayed within that budget. It is those exceptions that are the reason for the plea I make today.
At the end of the campaign, opportunities came our way that we had to take advantage of : Our endorsement by Ron Wilson and several community leaders in Powdersville; the opportunity to advertise in the Anderson Independent and the Powdersville Post at a reduced rate; and several other targeted mailings to groups
that our polling indicated would be important to the campaign. These opportunities caused us to exceed our budget.
Therefore, our plea is for your help one more time. The campaign cycle is over and a new reporting period has begun. So even if you have given all that the
law allows for the campaign, you can now give anew. If each one of you could help us with a contribution of $100, or whatever you can give, we can retire the campaign debt, that leaves Marshall free to consider another attempt at public office.
Again, thanks for all you have done. Even though we did not win this battle, we are committed to the long hall and we will win the war for quality education, access to health care, good jobs and protection of the environment.
